A very useful thing to know: 一番いちばん means “number one”, but it is also how Japanese makes the superlative (“the most”). 一番いちばん好すき means “like (it) the most / best of all”, and 一番いちばん高たかい means “the tallest / most expensive”.


If you want to say “the Nth one” in a sequence (first, second, third), add ~目め to get ~番目ばんめ - see the ordinal numbers post. The plain ~番ばん here is wonderfully regular - the reading stays ばん with no sound changes.
