It attaches to the い-stem (the 2nd stem from the Godan conjugations post). The part before ます is also called the masu-stem, and it is one of the most useful stems of all - lots of other grammar hangs off it.

Ichidan (Group 2)

Drop the final る and add ます.

Rule Examples
る → ます 食たべる → 食たべます, 見みる → 見みます, 教おしえる → 教おしえます

Godan (Group 1)

Change the final -u syllable to its -i counterpart, then add ます. A clean one-to-one swap, no sound changes.

Dictionary ending Becomes Example
く き + ます 書かく → 書かきます
ぐ ぎ + ます 泳およぐ → 泳およぎます
す し + ます 話はなす → 話はなします
つ ち + ます 待まつ → 待まちます
ぬ に + ます 死しぬ → 死しにます
ぶ び + ます 遊あそぶ → 遊あそびます
む み + ます 飲のむ → 飲のみます
る り + ます 取とる → 取とります
う い + ます 買かう → 買かいます

The usual look-alike trap: 帰かえる, 切きる and 走はしる are Godan, so they follow the る → り rule: 帰かえる → 帰かえります.
