For Godan verbs it is built on the あ-stem (the 1st stem from the Godan conjugations post). Once you can form ない, you can also reach the negative request (~ないでください) and the “must” pattern (~なければならない).

Ichidan (Group 2)

The easy one again. Drop the final る and add ない.

Rule Examples
る → ない 食たべる → 食たべない, 見みる → 見みない, 教おしえる → 教おしえない, 起おきる → 起おきない

Godan (Group 1)

Change the final -u syllable to its -a counterpart, then add ない. There are no doubling or sound changes like in the て-form - it is a clean one-to-one swap.

Dictionary ending Becomes Example
く か + ない 書かく → 書かかない
ぐ が + ない 泳およぐ → 泳およがない
す さ + ない 話はなす → 話はなさない
つ た + ない 待まつ → 待またない
ぬ な + ない 死しぬ → 死しなない
ぶ ば + ない 遊あそぶ → 遊あそばない
む ま + ない 飲のむ → 飲のまない
る ら + ない 取とる → 取とらない
う わ + ない 買かう → 買かわない

Watch the last row. Verbs ending in う do not become あ - they become わ. So 買かう → 買かわない, 会あう → 会あわない, never 買あない. This is the single most common mistake with the ない-form.

And the usual trap - verbs that look like Ichidan but are Godan, such as 帰かえる, 切きる and 走はしる, take the Godan る-rule: 帰かえる → 帰かえらない (not 帰ない).

Irregular and special

The two irregular verbs, plus one very important special case. Note that 来くる changes its reading from く to こ.

Verb Nai-form
する しない
来くる 来こない
ある (to exist) ない

That last one is essential: the negative of ある (to exist, for non-living things) is simply ない - never あらない. It is the same ない you use everywhere else, which is why “there isn’t / I don’t have” is just ない.

Conjugating ない further

A neat bonus: ない itself behaves like an い-adjective, so you can conjugate it the same way. That instantly gives you the negative past and other forms:

Form Ending Example (行いく)
Negative (present) ~ない 行いかない (don’t go)
Negative past ~なかった 行いかなかった (didn’t go)
Negative te-form ~なくて 行いかなくて (not going, and…)
Adverbial ~なく 行いかなく (without going)

What it is used for

Pattern Meaning Example
plain negative don’t / won’t… 肉にくを食たべない (I don’t eat meat)
~ないでください please don’t… 忘わすれないでください (please don’t forget)
~なくてもいい don’t have to… 来こなくてもいい (you don’t have to come)
~なければならない must / have to… 行いかなければならない (I have to go)
~ないで without doing… 寝ねないで勉強べんきょうした (studied without sleeping)

In casual speech ~なければ is often shortened to ~なきゃ, so 行いかなきゃ means “gotta go”.
