The た-form uses exactly the same rules as the て-form. Everywhere you would write て, write た; everywhere you would write で, write だ. If you already know the て-form, you already know this:

Ichidan (Group 2)

Drop the final る and add た.

Rule Examples
る → た 食たべる → 食たべた, 見みる → 見みた, 教おしえる → 教おしえた, 起おきる → 起おきた

Godan (Group 1)

The same sound changes (音便おんびん) as the て-form, decided by the last syllable of the dictionary form:

Dictionary ending Ta-form Examples
う、つ、る → った 買かう → 買かった, 待まつ → 待まった, 取とる → 取とった
む、ぶ、ぬ → んだ 飲のむ → 飲のんだ, 遊あそぶ → 遊あそんだ, 死しぬ → 死しんだ
く → いた 書かく → 書かいた, 聞きく → 聞きいた
ぐ → いだ 泳およぐ → 泳およいだ, 急いそぐ → 急いそいだ
す → した 話はなす → 話はなした, 貸かす → 貸かした

The one exception: 行いく (to go) ends in く but does not become 行いた. It joins the う・つ・る group: 行いく → 行いった.

And the same trap as before - verbs that look like Ichidan but are actually Godan, such as 帰かえる (to return), 切きる (to cut) and 走はしる (to run), follow the Godan る-rule: 帰かえる → 帰かえった (not 帰た).

Irregular (Group 3)

The same two irregulars. As with the て-form, 来くる changes its reading from く to き.

Verb Ta-form
する した
来くる 来きた

Compound する-verbs follow する: 勉強べんきょうする → 勉強べんきょうした.

What it is used for

Besides simply being the casual past tense, the た-form is the base for several key patterns:

Pattern Meaning Example
plain past did… (casual) 映画えいがを見みた (I watched a movie)
~たことがある have done before (experience) 日本にほんに行いったことがある (I have been to Japan)
~たほうがいい had better do… 休やすんだほうがいい (you’d better rest)
~たら if / when… 着ついたら電話でんわして (call me when you arrive)
~たり~たりする do things like A and B 食たべたり飲のんだりする (eat and drink, etc.)
past + noun the … that did 買かった本ほん (the book I bought)

Note that this is the plain past. For polite speech you use the ~ました form instead: 食たべました, 行いきました.
