It is built on the お-stem (the 5th stem from the Godan conjugations post). The polite version is simply the masu-form ending ～ましょう.

Ichidan (Group 2)

Drop the final る and add よう.

Rule Examples
る → よう 食たべる → 食たべよう, 見みる → 見みよう, 起おきる → 起おきよう

Godan (Group 1)

Change the final -u syllable to its -o counterpart, then add う.

The polite volitional

For polite speech, take the masu-stem and add ～ましょう. This is the everyday “let’s” you hear constantly.

What it is used for

Pattern Meaning Example
～(よ)う let’s… / I’ll… 休やすもう (let’s take a break)
～(よ)うか shall we…? 帰かえろうか (shall we go home?)
～(よ)うと思おもう I’m thinking of… 習ならおうと思おもう (I’m thinking of learning it)
～(よ)うとする to try / be about to… 出でようとした (I was about to leave)
